Cheltenham 2021 - Review

The week belongs to Henry De Bromhead, Rachael Blackmore and Jack Kennedy. Minella Indo won the Gold Cup having lost the RSA on the line this time last year. Everyone loves a comeback story and this is one because following that defeat there was a fall at Leopardstown at Christmas and a very ordinary run in February. I thought he was very overrated and even though he fit the age range  (the last 3 winners of the race were 7 or 8 years old), I over looked him for Al Boum Photo. Funnily enough it had the feel of when Al Boum Photo won in 2019 because there wasn't a lot of talk about him. I still expected him to be beaten even when he flew the last but A Plus Tard couldn't run him down. He proved me and the doubters wrong today by adding the top prize in National Hunt racing to that narrow second last year and the Albert Bartlett two years ago. What a Cheltenham record! Fantastic for Jack Kennedy as well. He's had some week too - Black Tears beating the hot favourite Concertis

ITV Racing Saturday 30th January Review

Shishkin did what he had to do in a race he went off 1/7 in. I went for Cheddleton to come in behind him but he was made a non runner some time before the race began. I've seen some complaining about Shishkins performance but not sure what people want, there must be massive pressure when you're long odds on favourite but he looked every bit of it. Floressa ticked 4 boxes in the next but was easily beaten by Miranda who only fitted the age range and was in recent of several pounds. I definitely had better luck yesterday on the flat which was broadcast in place of the abandoned Cheltenham trials day. I'm not a big fan of the flat but I might continue this beyond the jumps this year, ITV Racing usually start showing flat racing over the next few months so I'll see how that goes before deciding. Swiss Pride ticked 6 of 8 boxes and ran a great race in behind the leaders along the rail. As they hit the straight, the gap widened on the inside and he came through to take the lead and stayed on well only for Capananty Con to come through from a long way back to win it in the last few strides. Bobhopeornohope was one of 5 horses in the next race at Doncaster who ticked 6 boxes including the winner The Cob. I went with Bobhopeornohope because he'd won at the course last time out. My data to date suggested that Trainers of winning horses over the last 3 years ranks seventh out of the eight categories with a run over the distance range of the last 3 winners in the month(s) they last ran being the most successful. For these reasons, I discounted Ben Pauling winning this previously. Sometimes I get several horses meeting the criteria and I still have to make a decision and other times you get just one, like Pirate King in the next at Lingfield. He'd won this race last year and was a short favourite for Kieran Shoemark and Charlie Fellowes but he won the race as his price demanded. The big race of the day was the Great Yorkshire Chase with Cap Du Nord seemingly having the rock solid form of only being a few lengths behind the very impressive Royale Pagaille over Christmas. I had another decision to make in this one, Give Me A Copper and Rocky Treasure and I went with the former who ran into the position range, Rocky Treasure was the right age. In the end neither was involved for very long and both were pulled up. Takingrisks who'd disappointed at Newcastle clearly loved the heavy ground to take Aye Right on the run in. The favourite Cap Du Nord could only finish third. The final race was on the flat at Lingfield and Masked Identity was chosen over Catch My Breath based on age over course. Masked Identity led from the start which rarely bodes well. He was still there until half way down the straight but eventually got swallowed up in a blanket finish with the entire field of 7 covered by a length. Lethal Lunch won it, Catch My Breath was third. One winner and two placed on the day. Dublin Racing Festival next week, not sure if I'll do ITV Racing or the Irish Racing on RTE 2. Might have to rename it for a week!
