Cheltenham 2021 - Review

The week belongs to Henry De Bromhead, Rachael Blackmore and Jack Kennedy. Minella Indo won the Gold Cup having lost the RSA on the line this time last year. Everyone loves a comeback story and this is one because following that defeat there was a fall at Leopardstown at Christmas and a very ordinary run in February. I thought he was very overrated and even though he fit the age range  (the last 3 winners of the race were 7 or 8 years old), I over looked him for Al Boum Photo. Funnily enough it had the feel of when Al Boum Photo won in 2019 because there wasn't a lot of talk about him. I still expected him to be beaten even when he flew the last but A Plus Tard couldn't run him down. He proved me and the doubters wrong today by adding the top prize in National Hunt racing to that narrow second last year and the Albert Bartlett two years ago. What a Cheltenham record! Fantastic for Jack Kennedy as well. He's had some week too - Black Tears beating the hot favourite Concertis

ITV Racing - 16th January 2021 Review

Only 4 selections from the seven races yesterday as one only had 3 runners so no each way option and two others at Market Rasen didn't appear to have any history. The first pick of the day was Jay Bee Why in the 2m5f Novices Hurdle at Warwick. I tallied these up in a bit of a rush yesterday and Midnight River should have been my pick with 6 as opposed to 5 for the selection, Lord Of Kerak, Make Me A Believer and Oscar Elite but I had it in my head that I was going for Jay Bee Why who won at Warwick last time out. In the end it was Adrimel who won in a tight finish with two and a half lengths covering first to fifth which was where the pick finished, narrowly behind Midnight River. Make Me A Believer finished third. The big race of the day was the Warwick Classic Chase which can be a decent race for throwing at a Grand National chance. Le Breuil and Walk In The Mill had identical criteria while The Hollow Ginge was similar but I went for Ben Paulings 9 year old who went off joint favourite with the winner, Notachance who only ticked one box. Le Breuil looked well beaten from about 4 out having tracked the leaders for the whole race but like a potentially good National horse, he rallied and stayed on to come back and take 3rd. Apparently, he doesn't have a high enough rating for the Aintree spectacular so will need to win one before entries in February. If he does get in, he'll definitely be one to consider. Over at Market Rasen, the next race was a Mares National Hunt flat race and the pin was stuck in Eileendover who quickened like a really good horse under Paul O'Brien and make it 3 from 3 in Bumpers. She's now 10/1 for the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham but her Trainer Pam Sly poured cold water on the prospects of going there. Very exciting horse though, must put her in my tracker. So to the final race of the day, Come On Teddy was the choice. He went off favourite and was in the mix but could only finish third, Imperial Alcazar making up for Aura losing last week. One winner and 2 placed on the day. Age and month were consistent in three of the winners with Notachance proving to be a total exception in terms of data.
