Cheltenham 2021 - Review

The week belongs to Henry De Bromhead, Rachael Blackmore and Jack Kennedy. Minella Indo won the Gold Cup having lost the RSA on the line this time last year. Everyone loves a comeback story and this is one because following that defeat there was a fall at Leopardstown at Christmas and a very ordinary run in February. I thought he was very overrated and even though he fit the age range  (the last 3 winners of the race were 7 or 8 years old), I over looked him for Al Boum Photo. Funnily enough it had the feel of when Al Boum Photo won in 2019 because there wasn't a lot of talk about him. I still expected him to be beaten even when he flew the last but A Plus Tard couldn't run him down. He proved me and the doubters wrong today by adding the top prize in National Hunt racing to that narrow second last year and the Albert Bartlett two years ago. What a Cheltenham record! Fantastic for Jack Kennedy as well. He's had some week too - Black Tears beating the hot favourite Concertis

Flat To The Max - Corinthian Charity Race at The Curragh

As the rain drenches those attending and competing in The Open in Northern Ireland, I'm a bit surprised the going is still good to firm for this mile and a half charity race at The Curragh.

Aussie Valentine is a course winner and has won on the ground also. He has been rated as high 93 and is the top talent in this race but may not get the distance. Neverarushacon was a 145 rated chaser and has run at Cheltenham Festival in a race won by Delta Work last year. Hasn't run at this distance for 3 years and looks like needs longer and more cut in the ground. Edification has kept on well in last 2 races over 1m 2f and was a five length 3rd to Shakespear'sgalley over this distance on good to yielding. That horse has just finished second in race before this one. Place claims for Edification on that form. Flat To The Max has come up against some good horses over 1m 4f - 1m 6f and was second in a charity race when favourite. Centaur has had 6 runs in NH flat races over about 2 mile so comes down in trip here and could be interesting. Skeaping came 5th in this 2 years on same ground and at same weight. Of the rest Heir of Excitement has won on the ground, Love The Well has pulled up in 3 of last 4 two mile jumps races so this could be his distance. Mine Now looks like he's having a pipe opener. Midnitemudcrabs is trying a new trip having campaigned at around seven furlongs to this point. Pearl Warrior is interesting and gets the nod having been prominent over 1m 6f, second at Firehouse over this trip on good to yielding and giving a stone and second over 1m 2f on good to firm and giving 6lb to winner.
