Cheltenham 2021 - Review

The week belongs to Henry De Bromhead, Rachael Blackmore and Jack Kennedy. Minella Indo won the Gold Cup having lost the RSA on the line this time last year. Everyone loves a comeback story and this is one because following that defeat there was a fall at Leopardstown at Christmas and a very ordinary run in February. I thought he was very overrated and even though he fit the age range  (the last 3 winners of the race were 7 or 8 years old), I over looked him for Al Boum Photo. Funnily enough it had the feel of when Al Boum Photo won in 2019 because there wasn't a lot of talk about him. I still expected him to be beaten even when he flew the last but A Plus Tard couldn't run him down. He proved me and the doubters wrong today by adding the top prize in National Hunt racing to that narrow second last year and the Albert Bartlett two years ago. What a Cheltenham record! Fantastic for Jack Kennedy as well. He's had some week too - Black Tears beating the hot favourite Concertis

Dark Clouds Can't Stop Cozy Sky Getting Into The Money At Fairyhouse

Gordon Elliott was looking for a 7f race for Cozy Sky following an impressive run for the Racing Club over 6f. She was also tried over shorter at Navan but was left behind out of the gates and never recovered. She had two entries for Fairyhouse this week over six and seven furlongs but unfortunately she didn't qualify for the preferred distance but was declared for the shorter one.

Chris Hayes had the ride on the grey, who was one of the bottom weights, carrying just 8st 4lb. She also got a mention in the Sporting Life verdict as one to consider.  It was a big field of 18 runners on a rainy night west of Dublin and she got away well out of the stalls this time taking up a position in mid division. Cozy continued to travel well, one off the rail as they hit the bend at the four furlong mark but she had slipped to about 12th as they turned onto the straight. She was still travelling well at this point though and you could see Chris pointing her in different directions to try and develop a gap between the blanket of horses in front of her. As they passed the 2, she still wasn't making much headway, improving to about 9th but as they approached the final furlong more room appeared and she kept on well to get closer to the leaders. At the same time, the eventual winner Reeking Havoc, made her move on the outside from about as far back as Cozy Sky was, giving 7lb claimer Luke McAteer a clear run to win by half a length for Anthony Mullins. Our horse finished a few lengths back in 5th to take some prize money.

It was another very promising run from Cozy Sky and gave further credence to Gordon's belief that another furlong will suit her. Alex reported Chris Hayes confirmed this and she might even get a mile. They will look for something suitable for her over the next couple of weeks. Alex also reported that she was in great form the day after.
