Cheltenham 2021 - Review

The week belongs to Henry De Bromhead, Rachael Blackmore and Jack Kennedy. Minella Indo won the Gold Cup having lost the RSA on the line this time last year. Everyone loves a comeback story and this is one because following that defeat there was a fall at Leopardstown at Christmas and a very ordinary run in February. I thought he was very overrated and even though he fit the age range  (the last 3 winners of the race were 7 or 8 years old), I over looked him for Al Boum Photo. Funnily enough it had the feel of when Al Boum Photo won in 2019 because there wasn't a lot of talk about him. I still expected him to be beaten even when he flew the last but A Plus Tard couldn't run him down. He proved me and the doubters wrong today by adding the top prize in National Hunt racing to that narrow second last year and the Albert Bartlett two years ago. What a Cheltenham record! Fantastic for Jack Kennedy as well. He's had some week too - Black Tears beating the hot favourite Concertis

GERC Call It A Day With Pats Oscar And Viscount Wilson Claims Third At Perth

Pats Oscar has been with the club for a while now but hasn't rediscovered the form she had previous to joining us. I remember her winning a 2m hurdle at Fairyhouse in a race featuring the unfortunate Bettatogether in early 2018 but those days seem to be firmly behind her. She went chasing earlier this year and had a bad fall while leading at Ayr which it doesn't look like she has recovered from.

Pats Oscar was a course and distance winner at Perth a few years ago with the Champion Jockey on her back. Richard Johnson would also ride her in this race, the final time in GERC colours. The word from the yard was "Pat’s Oscar drops back in trip to 2m4f in a handicap chase. Unfortunately she does concede top weight as she is the highest rated horse in the race. The Keith Dalgleish trained Murphy’s Law might be the one to beat as he has strong hurdling form to his name this season but lacks the experience over fences. The going is currently good to soft which we know she will like". The ground ended up heavy from all the rain and it didn't look good for Pats from the first fence when she went over it sideways. She got plenty of mentions from the commentator, all about how poor her jumping was. I think she cleared one well but the rest were untidy to say the least. Dicky tried to cajole some more effort out of her but she wasn't interested and tailed off to finish a long way behind the eventual winner Murphys Law for Keith Dalgleish and the King of The North, Brian Hughes. Good tip from Alex who also reported that "It was a disappointing run from Pat’s Oscar today. She didn’t jump well and struggled to lay up. Gordon has decided to call it a day with her and she will be going back to her owner to be used as a broodmare".

Viscount Wilson was another horse who looked like he was on his way out of the club when he was up for sale in a claiming race at Galway but he's returned to us and run in Scotland twice in a week. "Viscount Wilson tries his hand at running over a distance just short of 3 miles. He is capable of running well and picking up a race but it just depends what mood he is in on the day I’m afraid". A bit of a monkey by all accounts. Richard Johnson took the reins to continue his partnership with Gordon in a race they won last year. He had VW in third, tucked away just behind the leaders and he stayed there comfortably. There was a long gap between the third last and penultimate hurdle but Viscount Wilson still looked like he had plenty left in the tank. He was still in third as they rounded the final bend. He then took second from Pinspot and tried to hunt down the leader Chocolat Noir who was looking to make all. Remarkably, they still hadn't reached the second last yet and as they approached it, from the head on view, Viscount Wilson looked like he was going to get up alongside the leader but as they went over the obstacle it was clear he was still a couple of lengths behind Chocolat Noir, who was digging in gamely. VW flew the last but was now only in a battle for second, with Pads, as the leader found plenty on the way to the line. Pads stayed on to take second. "Dickie Johnson was actually delighted with his run to finish 3rd. The ground ended up being very heavy which became a real test over the 3 miles. Both horses arrived back at Cullentra in the early hours of this morning and are enjoying a day off".

There was also news on another horse who is leaving the club along with Pats Oscar "Cozy Sky left the yard yesterday afternoon to go to her new home with club member Bernie Leadon-Bolger. Bernie is hoping to breed a few show horses from her. Bernie also has ex club horse Colonel Maximus and will keep us fully updated with their careers after racing".

All the best to Pats Oscar and Cozy Sky.

And news of a replacement "Gordon has sourced a new horse for the club – Fine Fettle (pictured). A 3yo gelding by Bated Breath. He’s been in training with Gordon since he was a 2yo. Originally owned by the Nick Bradley Racing Club, he failed to score on the flat in his 6 attempts but Gordon is going to try him over hurdles this winter. He has only recently been gelded and looks to prefer a longer trip so this could see a change in his form".
