Cheltenham 2021 - Review

The week belongs to Henry De Bromhead, Rachael Blackmore and Jack Kennedy. Minella Indo won the Gold Cup having lost the RSA on the line this time last year. Everyone loves a comeback story and this is one because following that defeat there was a fall at Leopardstown at Christmas and a very ordinary run in February. I thought he was very overrated and even though he fit the age range  (the last 3 winners of the race were 7 or 8 years old), I over looked him for Al Boum Photo. Funnily enough it had the feel of when Al Boum Photo won in 2019 because there wasn't a lot of talk about him. I still expected him to be beaten even when he flew the last but A Plus Tard couldn't run him down. He proved me and the doubters wrong today by adding the top prize in National Hunt racing to that narrow second last year and the Albert Bartlett two years ago. What a Cheltenham record! Fantastic for Jack Kennedy as well. He's had some week too - Black Tears beating the hot favourite Concertis...

Flat To The Max fails to make all at Killarney and club horse update

Flat To The Max was trying to continue the good form of his last two races and land a victory for Gordon Elliott Racing Club. There was only a small field of 5 lining up for this 1mile 6 furlong flat race and there was a familiar name in the field, 2017 Cheltenham Festival County Hurdle winner, Arctic Fire, now trained by Denis Cullen. Flat To The Max led them out of the stalls with Declan McDonogh doing the steering. Behind him were Persian Lion with Arctic Fire and the favourite Rasiym jostling for third and fourth. They continued like this for the majority of the race and it was Arctic Fire who was being ridden first as they turned into the straight. Mark Gallagher moved him off the rail looking for room on the outside. Flat To The Max still had the lead but as they hit the 1 furlong marker Persian Lion and Arctic Fire moved past him with the latter holding on to win by half a length from Jessica Harringtons horse. Flat To The Max was a couple of lengths back in third.

It was another good run from Flat To The Max. He looks fit and should win one soon. The winner was in receipt of 5lbs so would be interesting to see how they would compare off level weights.

Club horse update below.

We have two new exciting additions to the club…

Firstly we have a have 2 new additions to the club…

We have a half sister to Clonard Abbey, she is a 2017 Bay Camacho ex Readily Acclaimed filly. She is currently going throught the naming process, but will be named Bean Chlonard, meaning Clonard Lady in Irish. She is cantering away steady at home and all is looking well with her so far.

Next we have Viscount Wilson. He is a 2015 Bay Gelding by Lethal Force out of Highland Starlight. He ran into 2nd place in a handicap in Naas in February and followed that by another 2nd place in Wexford the month afterwards. With proven ability he should be a bit of fun for the club. He has an entry in Perth next week on Wednesday 15th May.

Hopefully we will have a few good days out with these two.

Pats Oscar: She has been working away nicely. She was brought to Skryne gallops during the week for a blow up the hill. It was reprted she worked well. Having not run since her fall in Ayr, she will be ready to run in the coming weeks again.

Smiling Eliza: She arrived home safe from Perth after her last run. She had a few easy days after that. She has done plenty of schooling at home to get her eye in and give her a bit of confidence. Again, another one who will be ready to run in the coming weeks.

Tapenade: He has been in good form at home and is well in himself. He is ready for another run now soon. He is entered in Punchestown this coming Wednesday in Punchestown in the handicap hurdle. Declarations will be made on Tuesday morning.

Flat To The Max: He ran a great race in the charity race in Punchestown last Saturday to finish in 2nd place. He came out of the race well and had an easy day or two afterwards. He has an entry in Killarney on Tuesday 14th May in the BetVictor Race. He seems to be a good addition to the club so far and we look forward to the days ahead with him.

Clonard Abbey: She is ready to run in the coming weeks when something suitable coming along. She is in good form in herself.

Cornakill Rose: Another one who is working away well at home. She has done plenty of schooling at home since her last run in Limerick. She is entered in Kilarney on Monday, declarations will be done on Sunday morning.

Cozy Sky: She is in good shape at home. I have been having trouble uploading the video, but hopefully we will have it up soon.
